The Double Post

The double-post route concept is commonly used throughout the NFL and is an especially great way to attack in the red zone.

The keys to the play are (1) to remove or hold any middle-of-the-field safety help and (2) to create inside leverage for the post coming from the outside.

As with many concepts, there are a number of creative ways to get to this route combination and create the necessary leverage. Below are a few great examples.

On this first play from the Cowboys-Seahawks Week 13 matchup during the 2023 season, notice how cornerback Devon Witherspoon widened in response to CeeDee Lamb motioning to a stacked position behind Michael Gallup. That would help create the inside leverage for Lamb’s post:

The Seahawks would be playing quarters coverage here, which meant the other key for Dallas was to occupy the field safety, Quandre Diggs. Getting him to move inside and bite on the inside post would open up a window for Lamb:
