The Chiefs’ signing of running back Kenneth Walker III has proven to be the biggest offseason acquisition in the league through the first 4 weeks of the 2026 season.
The Super Bowl LX MVP leads the NFL in rushing and has added an element to Kansas City’s offense that hasn’t really been there during the Andy Reid-Patrick Mahomes era.
Walker’s presence has taken some of the attention and pressure off of Mahomes. Defenses can’t just focus on stopping the Chiefs’ passing game. They have to account for their new-found rushing attack.
That has allowed Mahomes to let the game come to him a little bit more instead of forcing the issue, and it’s opened things up through the air. For instance, the Chiefs have gained the third-most passing yards off of play-action this season.
But Walker’s greatest contribution is that he’s given the Chiefs another way to attack defenses. Championships are reserved for the teams that have multiple ways of winning. And the Chiefs certainly have that on the offensive side of the ball this year.
Yards After Contact
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Walker’s early-season performance is that he’s created so much on his own. He leads the NFL in rushing yards after contact, yards after contact per attempt, and broken tackles (according to Pro-Football-Reference).
